Course overview:

This course is designed to equip staff with the skills necessary to deal with the situations that may arise when dealing with sufferers of Dementia:

  • Dementia Quiz
  • Normal Ageing: What happens as we grow old
  • Health & Safety at Work Legislation
  • What is Dementia? Some facts and future projections
  • What is NOT Dementia: Eg. An acute urine infection causing behaviour changes
  • Functions of the brain
  • Types of Dementia:
  • Stages of Dementia
  • How do we best support people with Dementia?
  • Person centered care planning, and life history
  • Behaviour, is there a reason for their behaviour? Examples of behaviours
  • Carer skills, see the person not the Dementia. Values for care (Dignity, Privacy etc)
  • Mental Capacity Act
  • Quiz re-visited
  • Any questions
  • Evaluation of course

Evidence of Learning

All learners will be continually assessed by observation of physical skill activity and will be required to complete a physical skills checklist.

The course is of half day or 1 day duration with a minimum of 6 learners and a maximum of 16 learners attending. Instruction will be provided by 1 Basis Training qualified Instructors

Certificated by Carmarthen County Council linked to National Occupational Standards NVQ 2 & 3 Health & Social Care HSC 23 & 33 & National Minimum Standards Care Homes for Older People 3.2, 3.4, 15.7, 23.1, 26.5. Domiciliary Care 3.2, 3.3, 19.5, 19.7. Care Homes for Younger Adults 3.2, 3.4, 21.7, 23.3, 26.4

A Booklet is issued to all attending the course along with a certificate of attendance.

Trainers facilitating the course follow the ICM code of practise and the all Wales NHS Passport the Company has also been accorded ICM Quality Award Centre status (QAC Registration Number QAC2022)
