How To Prevent Workplace Violence In Health And Social Care

In the health and social care sector, the third biggest cause of injuries comes from violent and aggressive incidents. While some may claim that it is ‘all part of the job’, all employees, regardless of their industry have a right to a safe and secure place of work.

Unfortunately, workplace violence is prevalent in the nursing and care industry. Work-related violence is described by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) as ‘Any incident in which a person is abused, threatened or assaulted in circumstances relating to their work.’

For staff in the care sector, work-related violence could appear in a range of situations. It is imperative that staff are not only prepared for these situations, but they have the right skills and capabilities to manage the situation for their own safety and welfare.

Care workers are at a higher risk of assault than many other occupations and in order for these hard-working carers to deliver the highest standard of patient care, they need to feel safe and secure in their place of work. At Basis Training, we not only equip staff with the techniques to manage work-related violence, but we also share the methods that can prevent workplace violence from occurring” – John Davies, Director of Basis Training.
